From Fog to Focus: A Journey Through Authenticity and Resilience
In the world of faith-driven entrepreneurship, mentorship is everything. I’ve been fortunate to learn from Russell Brunson and work closely with coach Vince Green. Recently, Vince gave me early access to a new AI tool he’s been building, designed to strip away the noise and get to the heart of our narratives.
The tool started with questions. Then deeper questions. Then questions that felt like surgery. In the end, it produced something raw and powerful: My Origin Story. Before I share it, I have to be honest: this process is vulnerable. But I’m learning that the people I love working with most aren’t looking for perfection. They’re real, they’re honest, and they’re simply trying to figure it all out.
Who I Actually Help: A Moment of Clarity
For a long time, I believed my audience was strictly “faith-driven entrepreneurs.” But I’ve come to realize that it’s not about labels—it’s about authenticity. Some of the most “faith-based” people I’ve met aren’t always genuine, while some of the most honest, searching people I’ve ever known don’t claim any faith at all. I love working with both because I believe truth leads to freedom. If you know anything about my mission, you know I am dedicated to helping people live free and fulfilled.
My Origin Story (Condensed)
I have always been driven, even as a small child.
I remember being sent to the principal’s office in kindergarten for something I didn’t even do. In that moment, a belief took root: Life might be harder than I thought. Like most high achievers, I responded by working harder. I stayed busy and filled my schedule to the brim. Externally, I was achieving; internally, I was scattered. I felt a constant pressure to prove I was “enough,” and no matter the accolade, it never felt like it sufficed.
The Real Battle
The real problem wasn’t my schedule—it was the belief that I wasn’t enough. That lie manifested in overworking, overcommitting, and losing my identity in my performance. Even as a pastor, my value was tied to my productivity. When I lost that role, I didn’t just lose a job; I lost myself.
Then, the storm hit. Divorce, job loss, and financial uncertainty followed in quick succession. I found myself working at Pizza Hut, wondering how I would survive. I felt like a failure and a “loser dad.” Underneath the survival mode was one terrifying question: “What if I never figure this out?”
The Shift and the Breakthrough
Then something changed. I realized I had a choice. Freedom isn’t about getting every step right; it’s about the power to choose your path. I realized I am enough—not because of what I do, but because of who I am. This discovery led me to coaching, where I found that people don’t need more effort; they need clarity. The right question at the right time can change the trajectory of a life.
The Framework That Changed My Life
- You don’t need more effort—you need focus.
- You have the power to choose your direction.
- Follow one course until successful.
- Clarity comes from the right questions.
- Progress comes from aligned next steps.
I eventually wrote the book “Focus!” to help others navigate this path.
Case Study: From Fear to Action
Fear once controlled me. In high-pressure moments, I would hesitate and overthink. In long-term goals, I would lose focus and pivot prematurely. I was fighting panic in the moment and inconsistency over time. Through coaching and intentional focus, I learned to regulate my emotions, stay present under pressure, and trust myself.
Real-World Testing at City Union Mission
At City Union Mission, life tested this new focus. When a security guard was violently attacked, we stepped in without hesitation. On another morning, a man named Josh collapsed. He turned blue and stopped breathing. I pulled him down and started CPR. Fear was present, but it didn’t control me. Focus did. Josh survived. The internal win is that I no longer need to be perfect or prove anything; I can simply stay present and focused.
Why This Matters For You
I created “Fog to Focus” and “Time Tip Tuesday” because the world has changed. We are facing three mega-trends: the Attention Economy (where attention is more valuable than time), Identity Fog (where people lose their sense of self), and AI Acceleration (which helps you move faster, even if it’s in the wrong direction).
In high-pressure moments, don’t try to be perfect—be present. In long-term goals, don’t chase everything—follow one course until successful.
